We are home and Molly is doing great! It is not often that I write the blog, so I will do it in my own style, and hope this doesn't detract from our fan base who loves Molly's wit and humor.
I'll start on Wednesday night since that is when the fun began for us. We were finally winding down after a long and stressful day of getting ready for the hospital, when some weather blew in to town. For those of you in North Texas, you know what I'm talking about, nasty weather. We got a call from Molly's mom around 8 o'clock letting us know that there were reports of a tornado touching down a few miles from our house. With this news, Molly went diving from the bathtub she was actually bathing in, to the bathtub in the interior guest bathroom, yelling for me to join her. I was having fun watching the neighbors' shingles getting ripped off, but she was right, and I retreated quickly. While we were waiting it out, we managed to lose power, but not before my chicken and asparagus had finished cooking!! So once the winds died down, we had a nice candlelight dinner. What an occasion.
Going to suvery the damage afterwards, we realized we had been very blessed. Some of our neighbors had major issues, with trees falling all over. One neighbors's tree fell into a car and another neighbor's tree fell into their house. Our next door neighbors also lost part of their fence, with it falling over onto our trashcans. Shortly after dinner we had power restored...for about an hour! Then we lost power again and didn't get it back until around 3 a.m. That is when all the lights came on and the TV started blasting fairly loudly. What a great wake-up call. Luckily I managed to get back to sleep until the alarm went off for real at 4:45. We had to be at the hospital at 5:30 for registration.
We finally got into our surgery prep room and had an assortment of people in to say hello: the pre-op nurse, anesthesiologist, surgery nurse, a surgery Fellow, the spinal cord monitor and then finally Dr. Zigler. Everyone was great and pleasant, which was important since Molly and I were tired and nervous for this to take place. Finally they kicked me out at 7 a.m. and took her back to start the procedure. Around 8:30, Dr. Zigler came out to explain how the procedure went and it was all great news. The highlight was that, not only did they get the disc out, but they also found that a small piece of the disc had broken off and was compressing the spinal cord, which could have caused permanant damage. This was what had probably caused her to pain to migrate from the left side to the right side in the last few days leading up to surgery. Despite the good news, I couldn't see her until she was out of recovery and into her own room, which finally happened around 10:30. She was still groggy, but it was great to see that girl in there, smiling back at me.
The day went by in a blur, with nurses and doctors coming and going at all hours. We even had a visit from the physical therapist. During the day we had visits from her mom (who stayed most of the day, thank you!!!), our nephew Jake, and our friend Spencer and his girlfriend. Molly did a great job getting up and out of bed to walk around, making sure that she didn't get any blood clots. Basically it was a long day and an even longer night. We are glad to have it behind us.
We got home today at around noon to Charlotte (Molly's mom) cleaning the house for us. She has been wonderful to us and we are so thankful for her help and support. We've spent the rest of today sleeping, watching movies, and just taking it easy. I'll keep everyone updated throughout the week periodically.
We just want to thank everyone so much for all of the love, support, prayers, flowers, plants, fruit baskets, and dinners that we have received and have been told are on the way. We are so thankful to have so many wonderful and loving friends and family in our lives. We appreciate each of you so much!!
