2020 - Part 1: January - Spring Break

The year started like any other.  Presley won the Zest award at school in January.  Dave and Brooks worked hard on Brooks' derby car for Boy Scouts, with some help from Uncle Brock.  Dave's company had a suite at the Texas Legends game, so we brought Brock and Kendra and the kids along.

February brought another Daddy Daughter Dance, but this time it was in Celina.  Dave and Presley went to The Toasted Walnut and then to the dance at Odell.  My sweet baby girl is starting to look like a beautiful young lady these days.

Since Presley was 3, she has told me she wants to have a birthday party at our house. So this was the year!  She wanted a princess party, where her friends came all dressed up. They painted canvas hearts in the garage, then ate some pizza and cake, before heading upstairs to watch a princess movie and get their nails painted.  My friend Melissa came to help paint a lot of little nails. Everyone had a wonderful time!

Brooks surprised Presley on her birthday by showing up to read to her class!  He's such a sweet big brother.

Brooks had a little incident at school with another child.  The kid kept bopping Brooks on the head with a pool needle.  So Brooks went to grab the noodle, and when he did, and pulled it back, he accidentally punched one of the PE coaches in her face.  Lots of lessons were learned that day!  And for the next week, while he worked around the house to earn money to pay me back for apology flowers.  At least he was working with a smile.

For Spring Break, we headed to Glen Rose, Texas, where we stayed in a beautiful cabin with The Crums and The Korths.  We went to Dinosaur Valley Park, where the kids got to stand inside actual dinosaur footprints.  We had a wonderful day hiking and playing.  The next morning, we went to Fossil Rim Wildlife Sanctuary, where we had a guided tour around the park, including a close up with the giraffes.

That was when things started to change.  I remember having a conversation about the coronavirus when we got there, talking about how some places were starting to shut down.  But it wasn't real to us yet.  We had no idea yet.

Once we got home, I started watching the news and wanting to be informed.  Dave and I decided we would avoid going anywhere with crowds.  People started talking about a possible shutdown of schools and businesses.  Other cities like New York were already shutting down.  Groceries started flying off the shelves.  People were buying everything they could get their hands on because we started to hear that we would be needing to stay home and that grocery supplies would be limited.  Toilet paper was nowhere to be found.  My dad started to worry and spent the day going to different stores, buying lots of meat and dry foods, stocking his pantry and freezers.  He told me to come over to take what we needed.  It didn't seem real.  I knew it was.  But it hadn't sunk in yet.

Thursday, March 12th we were supposed to go to the zoo, but canceled our plans because we decided it would be too crowded.  Instead, we decided to go to a small animal sanctuary in the country, about 45 minutes away, called Sharkarosa.  We went early to make sure to avoid a lot of people.  We took a few friends with us.  And that was the day that I think I realized just how serious this all was.  Being there was fun, but it was on my mind. Even though we were outside the whole time, I was very cautious to keep the kids away from other people.  I started to feel the threat of this virus I was hearing so much about.

That was also the day that Frisco ISD announced that they were extending Spring Break for a week.  Shortly after, they announced that we would be moving to e-learning.  Teachers would need to report on Monday to prepare, but our children were not allowed to come up.  It all seemed so surreal. The whole world was shutting down.  The whole world was scared.  The whole world was shocked.
